Indoor Teams Game Roundup 2023

Senior Team

29th October 2023; West Bergholt

We had the first National League format indoor game this afternoon against West Bergholt.
Bowling first, we witnessed a Jack French all-round Master Class,
commencing with a spectacular diving one-handed catch off the first ball and
culminating in bowling out their last batsman to conclude their innings.

In the meantime, Jack also took one other catch, was involved in a run-out, and secured two additional wickets while bowling,
thanks to excellent catches by Ollie H and Rowan.

Throughout the match, the tight bowling by Michael, Rowan, Hamza, and Ollie led to them being all out for 54 in 10.3 overs.

In the batting department, we reached our target of 55 in just 4.2 overs, with Rowan having to retire at 26,
Morgan scoring an unbeaten 15, and Hamza contributing 8 runs before being stumped off
a wide that granted us the winning runs! A fantastic start to the indoor season.

19th November 2023; Gt Bromley

Second indoor game of the season against local rivals Bromley.

Bsea bowled first and were set a target of 129 to win. Wickets from Michael (1-18), Stacey(1-11)and 3 from Jack(3-23), with a run out from Jacob Joy.

Batting Jack top scored with 28, with Jacob Joy getting 16 and Michael 15. Unfortunately we hit 86 falling short by 42 runs.

Big thanks to Will and Stacey for stepping in at short notice

10th December 2023; West Mersea

Batting first, Jack and Rowan opened but had both fallen with the score at only 30. Oscar was next out for 11, followed by Ollie Wright out for 12. With the score on 62 and 4.5 overs left, JP joined Michael at the crease, and more runs needed. At the end of the 12th over they were both still there, with Michael top-scoring on 21, JP on 11 and the total at 97.

Our final pair gave us a total that could be defended but Mersea got off to an excellent start  putting on 61 for the first wicket. Olly then took a wicket and then their replacement bat was run out next ball, with Gladwell having to retire the one after. Jacob then Rowan took wickets in the next two overs, leaving their score at 71 for 4 when Gladwell came back out, needing 27 off 3.4 overs. Jacob bowled the 11th over and despite tight deliveries he went for 11. This meant they needed 8 off the last over with 2 wickets left and Gladwell on strike. Rowan took the last over and on the first ball Olly took a good catch to get Gladwell out. This left last man standing and 2 balls later their last player was run out, giving us a very hard fought win by 6 runs!

7th January 2024; Witham

Batting first, our top scorer from the last game, Michael opened with Rowan. They put on 39 before Michael was stumped for 15. Rowan had to retire then having passed 25. That left Jack to bat with the man about to be renamed Ollie 'I'm going to run you out' Hill. Jack was run out for 7, soon after hitting a nice 6. Ollie W was the next to meet his doom, run out for 6. Not even his brother was safe as Alex was the next victim, run out for 7. This brought Rowan back in with 2 overs to go. Fortunately, he can run very fast and Ollie focused more on scoring runs and they finished not out, with Rowan on 48 and Ollie on 17. The final total was 114 for 4.

Michael and Alex opened the bowling and started very tightly. Their openers then found their rhythm and had scored 39 before Olly W came on and had one of them caught by Rowan off his 2nd ball, with the other opener run out next ball. At the end of the 9th over, they were on 68 for 3, having had one more player run out. This brought their 1st teamer to the crease, needing 47 runs off of 3 overs. Things were looking good for us but he changed all this scoring 27 in the next 2 overs and Witham got the winning runs with one ball to spare.

28th January 2024; Copford

Batting first we made a strong start with Morgan, Rowan, Jack and Michael all needing to retire after reaching 25. In fact we did not lose a wicket until over 11 with 124 runs on the board. At the end we had achieved our best score so far with a total of 148 for 2.

In the field, we were not at our sharpest and missed two early catches before Michael caught one off Oscar's bowling. After that, despite some tight bowling by Michael and Jacob J, it took until the 7th over before we took another wicket. Then, Morgan got a stumping, catch and run out, along with a catch from Oscar to finish their innings at 96, giving us a win by 52 runs.

11th February 2024: Gt Totham

Fielding first, Rowan and Oscar kept things tight before Rowan picked up two quick wickets to restrict Totham to 22/2.  Alex and Michael then took over.  Alex taking an important wicket before a good 50-run partnership saw Totham to over 100 runs before the visitor's captain was caught by Oscar off of Alex's bowling, from the last ball of the innings.

Batting, we stumbled a bit with Morgan falling cheaply. Rowan followed a little later before Jack and Oscar steadied the ship, both retiring on 26 not out.  Michael and Alex then say us home with almost two overs to spare.

10th March 2024; Coggeshall

A good win over Coggeshall started in the field but only after a very steady start from our opponents, with both openers batting well.  Hamza picked up the first wicket, with the first of two catches by Oscar.  The fellow opener retired before Oscar's 2nd catch off of Jack's bowling and an Oscar runout brought the opening batsman back in, and he went on to remain unbeaten on 36 at the close of the innings, from a total of 107.

A very steady batting performance followed.  Morgan and Rowan opened and both got to 20.  Rowan retired as did Jack, who came in at 3.  A slight wobble brought Rowan and Jack back together and they saw us home with 10.3 overs gone, Jack being not out on 39 (including two sixes!) at the end of the match.

17th March 2024; IPSCOL

Before the game IPSCOL sat top of the table and we needed a win to ensure a place in the play-offs next Sunday.

IPSCOL batted first and got off to a steady start scoring 23 off the first 3 overs. This was for the loss of one wicket following a diving catch by Hamza. Hamza followed up with a run out and then another diving catch off his own bowling. Our fielding was really strong and wickets fell regularly, with a catch by Jack off Michael's bowling and a fine run out by Oscar, being followed by a running catch by Rowan, from only Jack's 2nd ball, stopping a 6 and closing their innings. Their final total was 74 off 10.2 overs.

Morgan and Rowan opened the batting and set about their task well, despite some good deliveries from IPSCOL. In fact they both batted so well that, along with regular wides, when first Rowan and then Morgan retired, having scored more than 25, Oscar and Jack did not need to score any runs as another wide finished the innings. We had scored 75 for 0 wickets in 6.5 balls, meaning that we leapfrogged IPSCOL to the top of the table and guaranteed a place in the 1st v 2nd play-off next Sunday (24/3).

An excellent all-round performance by the team.

Junior Teams

22nd October 2023 U12 Terrier

It was a really promising performance by our under-12 indoor team this evening. Playing against a Kelvedon team containing several District players was always going to be tough.

Bowling first, all bowlers put the ball in the right place, with Daisy, Jasper B, and Thomas R taking wickets. Emily was outstanding in the field, taking 2 catches and 2 run-outs. At the end of their innings, they had scored 108.

In our innings, Daisy and Emily opened and put on 27 runs without losing a wicket. Our young second pair of Thomas and Jasper showed strong attacking intent, although a bit too adventurous at times. Our final pair of Jack and Archie played well to not concede a wicket and added 18 runs.

At the end, our total was 41, and, although it was a defeat, it showed real progress from the first match. So, well done, everyone!

5th November 2023 U14 Terrier

We had the Under-14s playing their indoor game against Witham this evening. Batting first, Alfie and Jake got us off to a solid start,
putting on 22 runs without losing a wicket. Pablo and Jack followed, adding 10 runs but losing one wicket to a remarkable diving catch.
James and Fraizer finished, adding 13 runs after losing one wicket. The total of 45, with only 2 wickets lost, shows real progression.

In the field, Fraizer and Jake bowled first, delivering accurate bowling to keep the score at 14 after 4 overs.
They were aided by a good run-out created by Pablo and Alfie behind the stumps. Jack and Pablo followed, with Jack's
leg spin proving effective and leading to a wicket caught by Jake. James finished off the innings, with extra overs given to Jack and Fraizer.

Although Witham ended with a total of 74, they are always strong, and at times, our bowling made them struggle.
So, despite the defeat, there were many positive aspects in our play.

The next game is against Great Bromley, featuring the Under-12s, scheduled for Sunday, November 12th, starting at 7 PM.

12th November 2023 U12 Terrier

The under-12s played Great Bromley this evening, and a fine performance was delivered by all!

Bowling first, Captain Daisy opened with Jasper B and bowled with pace and accuracy against their strongest pair. Thomas and Archie bowled next, only allowing the batters to put on a nett of 9 runs, with Archie taking a wicket. Harvey and Joe W finished off with both of them taking a wicket. In the end, Bromley had scored 53.

Daisy and Jasper opened the batting, and between them, they got us off to a good start, putting on 23. Thomas and Archie came next and defended well against tight bowling, adding a further 11 runs. This meant the last pair, Harvey and Joe, needed to get at least 20 for us to win. After the first 2 overs, we had added 9, leaving things tight. However, in the next over, with some excellent running, the boys added 15 more, and with the last over adding another 6, we ran winners with a total of 64!

The next Colts' game is on 26th November at 6 pm when the under-14s get their chance to play Great Bromley.

Sunday 26th November 2023 U14 Terrier

The under-14s played against Great Bromley this evening with a young team, and what a bowling performance they put in! Bromley batted first, with their District player opening. Jake and Joe W opened the bowling, and at the end of the first 4 overs, Bromley were on -8 after Brghtlingsea had taking 4 wickets and one run-out!

Daisy and Emily bowled next, and they took a wicket and 2 run-outs, restricting Bromley to 16 runs.

Joe B and Alfie K brought us home, taking a wicket and a run-out. Overall, we took 10 wickets, helped by excellent fielding (top catch by Daisy and several run-outs usually involving Alfie), meaning they finished on 30.

Alfie and Jake opened the batting, and despite facing some very 'variable' bowling, took our score to 19 at the end of their 4 overs.

Emily and Daisy then faced some more varied bowling but added another 9 runs.

That meant our final pair of the two Joes needed to put on runs to give us the win. And it was never in doubt as the Joes put on 21 and were the only pair not to lose a wicket! Well done, everyone!

The next game is on Sunday, 3rd December when the under-12s play West Bergholt A.
